The Seven Churches of Revelation: Thyatira – Yet They Tolerated Sin in Their Lives and Church

This Church Was Commended For Some Things However, …

“And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass;.” -Rev 2:18 (KJV)

In the Book of Revelation, the Lord describes seven churches that were present at that time. They represented the health and spiritual condition of churches [and people] during the time in which this was written ~ 95BC, and they represent all Christian churches and Christians today. The church at Thyatira was commended for their faith, their service, their works and they were even growing but the Lord had something against them.

They tolerated and allowed sin in their midst!

They allowed a prophetess called Jezebel to lead them into sexual immorality and eating food sacrificed to idols. Some say this was an actual person but I think it was the spirit of the Old Testament Jezebel (1 Kings). She was bad news to the people of ancient Israel and brought upon them all sorts of evil. She led her husband the King – Ahab – into the worship of Baal and had 450 prophets of Baal. Basically, this queen was depraved and the epitome of pure evil. She was the worst of the worst.

The Lord blasts the church at Thyatira for allowing the same spirit into their house and lives. Sure the church was outwardly doing very well – they had love and faith and good works but they tolerated and condoned the sins that were leading them astray. They were into the “deep things of Satan”. Can you believe this? For this was a church that seemed to be doing so well and outwardly looking fine. However, there were some – a remnant – that didn’t follow along with this spirit and the Lord  told them to remain steadfast in their faith.

Folks, this church has tremendous implications for us and the churches in our time now. There are so many Christian churches growing and building bigger and better but they are missing the Lord and all that He has proclaimed in His word the Bible. So many churches fail to teach about sin and therefore they are allowing it in their houses. This is huge and the writing to the Thyatira church should awaken us to the perils of complacency, tolerance, indifference, and lethargy in Christian churches today. Many, many pastors fail to teach the full council of God and because of this many churches are falling victim to the Jezebel spirit. And most don’t even know it. For if you don’t take an active stand against evil you will succumb to it and let me tell you it can be subtle and covert.

For if you don’t teach on sin and all that it entails then there’s a good chance you condone it. Yes, this is true and a truth that most don’t want to hear or face.

Therefore I urge all who read this today to take a look at the seven churches that the Lord addresses directly in Rev 2 and 3. Examine how He appears to them  (Thyatira – “And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass; “) and what this means. In the case of this church, He through eyes of fire could see through everything they did and with feet of fine brass He would bring judgment.

These things were written for us today, not just back for the first century churches. It’s time we wake up and read what God’s Holy word means for us Christians in our lives and in our lifestyles. We have become soft, easy, comfortable, and rely on ignorant Bible leaders and preachers to tell us everything they want us to know not necessarily what God wants us to hear. These words are for all of us to be edified, lifted up and set on that narrow road that leads to the Lord and eternal life. Many will be lost because they haven’t read their Bibles and followed the truth of Scripture. Many will be lost because they didn’t want to hear of their sins nor repent of their iniquities and thereby allowed the deep things of Satan to infiltrate they lives. Friends, this is hugely serious and we had better take a good long and hard look at where we are at in the Lord for the church, our pastor or our friends won’t be standing with us when we stand before the Lord.

How about you? Are you aware of your sin daily? Do you repent of it as needed? Or have you condoned, tolerated and allowed sin to creep into your life and pacify you through it’s craftiness, it’s smooth, soft, and cuddly feelings that make you feel guiltless and good? Time to rethink and get right with God. Time to read His word and know the truth. The time is now for we are not guaranteed even the next minute of life.

Are you saved?

The Seven Churches of Revelation: Thyatira – Yet They Tolerated Sin in Their Lives and Church — 1 Comment

  1. As a nation the USA follows the same path as the church at Thyatira. One wonders how long God will wait before passing judgment. Of course the presence of the church and the work of the Holy Spirit in urging the lost to be saved is a restraining effect for our benefit. However statistics show a serious decline in church attendance and the rejection of faith by many of the younger generation. God’s mercy is wonderful.
