How Well Do You Know God?

“You are My witnesses,” says the Lord,” And My servant whom I have chosen. That you may know and believe Me, And understand that I am He Before Me there was no God formed, Nor shall there be after Me.” -Isa 43:10 (NKJV)

The God of my life, the God of this blog, the God of all Creation is the God of the Bible – of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. I am not talking about any false gods, i.e. Allah, worshiped by many and also claimed by many to refer to Almighty God. No this is not the case! You see, I am talking about the one and only true God, the God defined in the Bible and alone is the one that everyone will bow their knee to when they see Him – Phil 2:10. This I want to clarify and make absolutely clear since there are many today that assert that Almighty God has become universal and a common name for many gods. This is not the case as salvation is found in no other name – Acts 4:12.

Our fast-paced culture today is filled with high tech gadgets that help us communicate better and make our lives easier. Or so we think. We use our cell phones to communicate with others, we text and email with passion and fervor, but is all this really that good? Or are we learning less and less about one another? Avoiding personal interaction for the nuances and convenience of high-tech living? How many of us stop and smell the flowers these days? How many take time to just listen to the wind flowing through the trees on a warm summers day? Probably not many. Instead we are constantly in motion from work to home, eating, shopping, sports, TV, exhaustion and finally sleep and the cycle just keeps repeating. With our lives in a continuous spin and our personal touch relegated to electronic bits and bytes, do we take a time out from the flurry of everyday life to talk to our Creator God? If not, why not?

How well do you know God right now today? Or more appropriate, how well do you want to know God? Do you spend any time alone, you know, just you and Him? Do you have a ‘prayer closet’ (Matt 6:6) where you go to speak and seek His face? Or do you just say a few words in your car (with your radio on, half listening to the music or news) on your way to work or at lunch while munching down a burger? My friends, we should desire with utmost urgency to know who the God of the Bible is, His character, His ways, His love and mercy, His position in our lives. Where does He fit in and if so, where? We must spend time with Him every day, alone with no distractions, silently just speaking to Him from our heart. Worshiping Him, praising Him, loving Him. Also telling Him our needs, desires and wants. Share with Him like you would with a close personal friend. He wants you to. BTW, do you know the Lord’s prayer? Where it is in the Bible, and what does it mean personally to you? This was the only prayer that Jesus taught to His disciples and should be an example for and to us. A pattern of prayer encompassing: worship, praise, supplication, forgiveness, direction, leading and protection.

The Lord’s Prayer

“In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen” -Matt 6:9-13 (NKJV)

Knowing one another requires personal communication with them – one-on-one and face-to-face. We know our parents because we have spent much time with them growing up. All the more, to know God requires that we spend quality time with Him, learning about Him through reading the Bible … daily. Start simple – from say, one verse to multiple chapters but grow in this daily! If you claim to be a Christian and do not read His word then you will not know Him completely. We have many Christian Bibles and resources here in the Western world and therefore we have no excuses not to have access to His word. Folks, we need to know God now more than ever. The time of His coming is growing close and as such we must endeavor to seek Him with fervent prayer, thanksgiving and supplication – Phil 4:6. I urge you today to get to know God Almighty more intimately, more intensely, more sincerely. Pour out your hearts to Him, He will hear you for He desires your fellowship more than you could ever know. Amen.

Coram Deo
