Bible Prophecy Commentary – Russia – A Bear that Will Devour Much Flesh?
Russia is prepping and showing no signs of cowering. In fact, they are more or less intimidating the West by flying close to NATO countries coasts and into international airspace without hesitation. They are gathering intelligence from the air (more) and from the sea. But to what end? What are they up to? As the West piles more sanctions on an already declining Russian economy what will Putin do? As a former KGB officer he seems capable of almost anything. It seems that Bible Prophecy describes the land of Russia as leading an invasion against Israel in the Gog/Magog war outlined in Eze 38 and 39. They will not be successful and they will be defeated by God Almighty Himself. Will Russia become the second beast or kingdom that Daniel describes in his vision in Daniel chapter 7? Unknown for now but keep watching. These kingdom beasts are not really known at this point.
As we read scripture it also is apparent that the greatest nation – America – that ever existed both in economy and superpower status is nowhere to be found in prophecy. Many BP scholars wonder why is this? What happens to America? Is it because we were once so blessed yet have now turned our back on Almighty God that He has judged us and reduced us to a third-world [spectator] position? Remember the scripture – "…to whom much is given, of him shall be much required…" -Luke 12:48. We are failing rapidly in this.
So while we see the news reports of Russia engaged in military drills all over and the testing of new missile systems the West seems lethargic and unresponsive. Amos was a OT prophet sent to warn the northern kingdom [of Israel] of their gross rejection of God, idolatry and wickedness. He was directly sent by God to warn them but they shunned him and did not listen. God finally had enough and some 40 years later the 10 tribes comprising the northern kingdom were either killed, carried off or dispersed by the Assyrians. Amos 3:11 stood out to me like a red flag when I read it some time ago. Will this happen to America by its rising enemies that have seen the weakness prevail in now a subdued and sleepy America? Russia and China have made threats and yes, even the crazed twisted dictator in N. Korea has threatened America with nuclear and cyber attacks.
We are seeing a changing world seemingly on a fast-track for destruction: wars, conflicts, breakdowns, etc. But wait … nothing will occur or transpire without the hand of God sanctioning it and BTW, He has the game plan for the last days before His Son's arrival. The world will suffer many things but nothing that He hasn't already told us in His word. Yes, some things will be revealed as the days progress but we must remember He is still on His throne and directing the nations. Satan is alive and causing all kinds of evil, dread, fear, wickedness and lawlessness but he cannot ( I repeat – cannot) do anything unless Yahweh God allows him to.
For believers, our hope is in knowing the Lord is in control and in trusting He will see us through. He will provide and protect His elite (Gentiles and Jews) but we must have faith and trust in His Sovereign hand. Before all hell breaks loose on the world are you right with Him today? The King of Kings and Lord of Lords is coming soon. Are you ready?
