Last (End) Days: Readiness or Lethargy and Complacency?

Are You Awake & Are You Watching?

“Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will dress himself for service and have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them.” -Luke 12:37 (ESV)

The cares of this life can be consuming to one’s purpose and direction. They can cause you to say, think and do things that are irrational and illogical based on current affairs. And the current affairs manifest themselves in the chaos and turmoil that the world is experiencing right before our eyes. Many things including people can derail us from the truth found only in God’s word. To be found only in following Jesus, counting the cost of our discipleship along the way. Are we one of His or in tune primarily with worldly things?

The Lord commands us in His word to be constantly watching for the signs of His return so we can be ready and not ashamed or lacking in spiritual fervor. He calls on us to be awake and not be found sleeping. We are to be constantly looking for signs in the Sun, moon and stars including the roaring of the sea and the perplexity of the nations. We are to be looking and heeding the signs in nature. Signs in our economies. Signs in our culture and society. Signs in the geopolitical arena. We are to be watching and awake at all times.

Watching involves noticing what’s happening around you, locally and in the world. We are not to be complacent about the things of God nor in avoiding looking for the signs of His return. We are commanded to be on 24×7 watch – like a watchman (but certainly we are to take time for physical sleep). We Christians can’t afford to take days off from knowing what is occurring in the heavens and earth. Why? So we can tell others – loved ones and friends, warning them for the things coming upon the earth.

Watchman and those that watch (all Christians) should know what they’re watching for so we must keep ourselves immersed in God’s word so we can discern truth from deception and lies. We must never falter in this or we leave ourselves open to deceit and the lies that now encompass the people and nations of the earth.

“But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap. 35 For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.” -Luke 21:34-36 (ESV)

Jesus tells us in His word to also not be bogged down with the cares of this life. We are to be ready, awake at all times and praying. We can’t keep our heads buried in the dirt because we don’t think His coming is soon or at all.

It’s time to also be prepared for we are assuredly in the last (end) days before Jesus returns, and I myself do not want to be found sleeping. Remember, Peter, James and John in the Garden? They were asked by Jesus to watch and pray. Mark 14:34-42. What did they do? They fell asleep! Are you asleep today? Are you only half watching? Or maybe you are in the 75% watching club. Not good enough! These days demand 100% uptime watch, alertness and preparation for His return. No taking days off cause we don’t want to hear, see and know the terrible things going on in the world. We must instead have a heart and head of preparedness in knowing God’s word and aware of what He said to watch out for and what is currently taking place all over the globe.

STo where are you at today? Half-hearted watching? A part-time watcher? Too many cares in your life: work, friends or family. Remember, one day you will stand before the Lord. You and only you. Not you and your spouse or family. You and you alone. Are you ready to stand before the Son of Man and have you been a good watchman? Tough questions that really demand tough and real answers.

“There will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth dismay among nations, in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves, 26- men fainting from fear and the expectation of the things which are coming upon the world; for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27- Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28- But when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” -Luke 21:25-28 (NASB)

“Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?” -2 Peter 3:11-12
