Fear and Trembling at the Presence of God

“Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest?
2- For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.” -Isa 66:1-2 (KJV)

According to Webster to tremble means to shake or be afraid or be nervous. Do you tremble at the very name of God? Are you afraid of Almighty God? Do you live in reverent fear of His name? All pertinent questions especially for today’s Christian. You see not many people actually know what it is to tremble or fear the name of the Lord.  In the OT, they, at times, knew this well and feared God. Today … not so. We casually inch along on life’s journey remembering Him slightly as we attend church on Sunday or haphazardly say a prayer or two throughout the week. We cross the threshold of our churches only to sing a few songs, have a prayer here and there and then listen to a often weak drama-filled sermon on nothing about the Fear or Holiness or the presence of God in our lives. This many times is rationalized as offensive so it is left out.

Tremble, thou earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob;” -Psa 114:7 (KJV)

Folks, when was the last time you trembled at hearing the name of God? When was the last time you heard a teaching on the Fear of the Lord? God, the Lord Jesus Christ is not just another cuddly buddy to us. He is not our ‘cuz’ or ‘homie’. He is our Creator and we should show ultimate respect and reverence for Him and His word all the time. We should honor and revere Him daily in and out of our homes. When you look James 2:19 straight on you will find that even our adversary the demons tremble at the name of God, so why don’t we?

“Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble” -James 2:19 (KJV)

God has become forsaken and most often forgotten in our lifestyle and daily routines. I firmly believe this is why we don’t see the hand of God moving in our midst today in healings and miracles. Few churches today even offer an invitation for salvation. We have become callous and causal to God’s name and His word. We should be on our knees, praying like never before for our friends and family – their souls and eternal destinations. We should be seeking God’s face for wisdom, knowledge and understanding. Folks, this is not a time to fool around with the things of God, for if you are engaged in this it’s a dangerous situation to be in. Read a NT example, found in Acts 5,  how Ananias, with Sapphira ‘fooled’ around or lied to the Holy Spirit. In other words, they didn’t take the things of God serious. They were smitten dead! We need to tremble before Him in reverential fear and awe … daily!

The Lord God is coming again and many, I think, have lost this vision even though it is clearly spelled out in His word. So why don’t people believe and heed it? Laziness, caught up in pleasure, greed, gain, power and lust, I would presume. America has it pretty easy right now, lots of stuff: food, cars, TV, electronic gizmos. Lot’s of things to distract and pull you away from trembling before God Almighty. Turn the TV off, turn the cell phone off, turn the computer off and pray silently before the God of all the Universe and wait upon Him.

Please friends, take heed and bow before the Lord you God and Creator. Tremble in awe of His presence, His Holiness and in total respect of His person. He will look upon those who are poor and of a contrite or humble and repentant spirit. Amen

Grace and peace,
