Bible Prophecy Commentary: What Must America Do?

Lots of discussions about this new president these days. Some good, some bad. Many say all will be well now with God's "pick" in the White House.  Many say that he has surrounded himself with Godly people and so America will come back from the depths of darkness it sank into.

You've got to admit he's putting the pedal-to-the-metal in his first few days in office and seemingly doing the right things or at least the good intentions are there. Pounding out the executive orders, etc. But wait… What does the Bible say about a land that is broken and Godless and the people dull of hearing and blind in spiritual sight? You know … America.

America is sick with unrepentant sin and this poison, driven by the powers of darkness, has infected this once Godly land like never before in America's history. So what must we do…?

Yes, the overused, in some cases, verse found in 2 Chronicles 7:14 could be the key verse in the Bible that charts where America is at now and where it's going.

"If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land." -2 Chron 7:14 (ESV)

If we really break this verse down what is God saying to heal a broken land? Who is it addressing?

  • First, it says "my people". In other words, the ones professing His name claiming to be Christians.
  • Second, it says that these folks must humble themselves before a Holy and Living God. Humility comes in the form of a broken and contrite heart – Psa 51:17.
  • Third, it requires Christians to pray and seek the Lord's face – Isa 55:6-7; Prov 8:17
  • Fourth, It requires that those that are really serious about doing something about their sin must: turn an amend their ways and repent of their sin. This requires action by the person – specific action that will result in a changed mindset and lifestyle.

You see that in order for the Lord to heal the land and people the people must take action and do something. This is not a passive matter. It will not come by going to church and just sitting there Sunday after Sunday with no change of heart, mindset or being void of action. i.e. If you like to watch X- rated movies, stop. If you swear and lie, stop. If you are engaged in an unholy lifestyle. turn it around. The evangelicals in America must lead this charge in prayer, repentance and with sincerity. If this does not happen we will continue the slide closer towards the anger of God.

We have an excellent ancient account of a nation dancing with aberrant sin and filled with a rebellious and wicked lifestyle (similar to America now). Jonah was the prophet and Nineveh was the land. Nineveh was very wicked at the time when [reluctant] Jonah was dispatched by the Lord to warn them if they did not repent of their sin they would be destroyed. The king heard this and got the message quick! He and his subjects repented in sackcloth and ashes. Did you hear that??? The king of the nation started this action and it included man and beast. Everyone had to do something!  Think they were serious? Oh yeah! And God turned away His anger. However, some 100 years later after they returned to wickedness and rebellion to God, Nahum, the prophet, was sent. This time they told him to get lost and were some 50 years later destroyed by God.

"And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown. 5- So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them. 6- For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. 7- And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water: 8- But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands. 9- Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?" -Jonah 3:4-9 (KJV)

Now let's overlay these things to our current situation with a new president and administration. Have you heard of any of the about four steps being taken by any national leaders, staff, administration or people? Nope. Was it even mentioned or proclaimed at the inauguration? Nope – crickets.

The reality of the moment is if America does not do these things – what God has directed – we will not be healed and we will not get better. Oh yes, returning to the full support of Israel is great but will this really happen? These's a lot of talk out there and the intentions are good but is moving the embassy the best thing for Israel knowing that severe threats of Arab uprising/war has been voiced and seems to be very real and very serious.

Folks, we live in serious and dangerous times. I  firmly believe that Mr. Trump will accelerate Bible Prophecy with pedal-to-the-metal speed and ferocity. Why? Already he's upsetting the political, economic and social apple carts of the world from trade to militaries to national leaders and entities. This may not portend well for the future of America. There is no stopping the drive towards getting it done his way. No God being proclaimed, no national seeking the Lord, no prayers from his lips, but lots of optics mixed with tons of pride!

We have a new president that is highly engaged in hubris. Let's be reminded that God hates pride – Prov 8:13. What will this herald in Biblically speaking for the future if ways are not changed, mindsets changed and attitudes humbled?

This is not pleasing to the Lord. Let's hope and pray that he turns things around and seeks God in his life and from a national perspective. Only then will the land of those who name the name of the Lord will be healed.
