Are the Weeds of Complacency and Lethargy Choking the Life Out of Your Christian Faith?

Are You Really Serious About Knowing the Lord Jesus Christ?

I have somewhat of a litmus test that will help you determine where you may be at in your walk with the Lord. How do these questions affect you in your faith?

  • Does the recent gender identity (transgender) dictate from the WH make you very angry at what this nation has become? Does it make you angry enough to sound off at your state governor and associated politicians?
  • Does political correctness make you gag?
  • Does the same-sex marriage law make you just plain sick?
  • How about the ongoing funding of our tax dollars for abortion, does it make you upset?
  • Does our government subsidy of Planned Parenthood agenda make you want to vomit?
  • The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) no longer defended by our government. Does this make you think God has been tossed out of our nation?
  • What does the immoral sickness now plaguing our nation mean to you?
  • How about the circus of the 2016 President Race – fights, violence, riots – and no God. This mean anything to you?

These are just a few questions that should make you think just exactly what is subtly happening to this once Godly nation and what may be happening in your heart concerning your faith in Christ. Are you growing cold and/or callous to the things of God so the items listed above don't bother you much? (Personally, I'd like to know where are the Godly Christian churches speaking out in all these abominations.) What about the mega-churches sounding off? Taking a stand for God's values? Where are they? – Where is your church at with these things; ever hear anything from the pulpit?

How about you … do you do or say anything or write anything? Or … are you silent, not wanting to offend anyone or make waves? Have you in essence become complacent and/or lethargic in your walk with Christ? If this is the case, can I submit to you that He is not happy with your complacency or your spiritual stagnant heart. Read the verse from Zep 1:12 below.

""It will come about at that time That I will search Jerusalem with lamps, And I will punish the men Who are stagnant in spirit, Who say in their hearts, 'The LORD will not do good or evil!'." -Zep 1:12 (NASB)

Being a Christian is way more than just going to church every Sunday or to a Bible study during the week. Do you tell others about your faith? Do you pray for others? Or … does fear make you withdraw and take on the role of a faithless introvert? Do you seek God with all your heart and desire a sincere relationship with Him?

What About Those Ten Virgins?

This is a very applicable parable reflecting our position as real Christians in the eyes of Almighty God. This parable can be read in Matt 25:1-13. There were 10 virgins or bridesmaids that went out to wait for the bridegroom (our Lord Jesus Christ). Five of them had prepared with extra oil for their lamps in case the bridegroom tarried. The other five were lazy or lethargic in that they didn't take any extra oil in case their lamps went out. They were complacent because, as it seems, they didn't much care about being prepared or ready to meet the bridegroom. Their faith was weak but, hey, they were there at every Sunday (Sabbath) (Synagogue) service and sang, prayed and fellow shipped like many of us do today. You see friends, God looks on the heart and not the mind when He surveys our faith – 1 Sam 16:7.

They all looked good, probably couldn't tell the difference between the wise and the foolish (unprepared, indifferent) ones. They probably are all seen in Christian churches today but let me tell you a truth about this. If the Lord finds you complacent in your faith, uncaring or distant about spiritual and worldly events affecting your faith, then things may not go well for you. As you know the five wise had enough oil for their lamps and went into the marriage feast with the bridegroom. The foolish … did not, and the door was shut in their face. For the bridegroom said he didn't know them!

Is this you today? Maybe looking and acting the religious part – attending regular church, Bible studies but you are stone cold complacent and weak in your faith. Have the weeds of this world sprang up unchecked in your faith walk. Remember the parable of the sower and the four types of soil? Matt 13:1-23. Which type of soil are you? Hard path, rocky places, among thorns or on good soil?

Let me ask one last thing… How often do you read your Bible? Every day, once a week, a month or perhaps you only open it on Sunday's and then you read off the convenient projection screen on the wall?

Folks, the hour is getting very late and the Lord's return ever nearer. Just look at all the signs called out in His word that are converging now in the world. If He came today, would you be found complacent in your faith or strong with a firm understanding, knowledge and relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ?

A challenge for all of us right now today. We must lose any complacency or lethargy that has sprung up and is choking out our faith. Build instead a firm foundation in the Lord by praying, speaking out, taking a stand, witnessing to family and friends and reading our Bible.

"Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?" -2 Peter 3:11-12
