My Bible Prophecy Commentary – Russia’s Putin = Pretty Crafty Fellow:
“Over A Barrel” means, in this case, a position of helplessness. It seems that if the US imposes sanctions on Russia over the Crimea situation that Russia could respond in a way that would counter these sanctions and impose an even greater [financial] problem for the US and Europe. In other words, we could be in serious economic trouble! Consider the following quote from a Russian news site:
“We hold a decent amount of treasury bonds – more than $200 billion – and if the United States dares to freeze accounts of Russian businesses and citizens, we can no longer view America as a reliable partner,” he said. “We will encourage everybody to dump US Treasury bonds, get rid of dollars as an unreliable currency and leave the US market.” (re: Rianovosti, 3/4/2014)
So the huge looming question is why has Russia decided to play this chess game with the rest of the world? He (Putin) seems to have the upper hand, is bold and is not backing down to the ‘West’. Russia could also rally other nations such as China to dump our debt. Micheal’s article in hotlink above states that China did in fact dump 50 billion dollars in Dec 2013. Is Russia’s ultimate goal to intimidate America and eventually cause financial havoc rendering us ineffective on the world scene? Time will tell.
Our weakness across the geopolitical spectrum has now come around, it seems, to bite us. We must be cautious and leery of Russia’s new embolden posture and their position now in world affairs. They will play, I believe, a big part in near future Bible Prophecy (Eze 38 Gog/Magog war). Watch this situation with focused eyes and ears folks. A situation happening thousands of miles away could affect every American in the days ahead.
Keep alert, keep watch, keep your eyes on Israel and keep in prayer.
